Hair Issues Overseas

In pictures: Black Beauty and Hair Magazine Adverts

This advert promotes the notion that natural African hair is unruly, unmanageable and "yuck" whilst straight hair is desirable, attractive and "nice".

In our letter to the editor of the Black Beauty and Hair magazine we stated that "it is totally irresponsible and immoral... to promote this oppressive eurocentric view of African aesthetics. As the movement towards respecting and loving our natural appearance and African identity becomes increasingly prevalent amongst the African British community, adverts for products such as those mentioned above are regressive and counter productive."

The noted women's rights author bell hooks reminds us of the cultural significance of chemical hair straightening; “Individual preferences (whether rooted in self-hate or not) cannot negate the reality that our collective obsession with hair straightening reflects the psychology of oppression and the impact of racist colonization.”

Kingdom non-profit organization that challenges
the negative representation of the African British
commumity.

What I always find very telling is the response that women give if they are ever asked why they straighten their hair. A great many of those asked will reply that they just want to look 'nice' or they just like the way it looks.

To that retort I counter...'Have you ever asked yourself WHY you think that straight hair is 'nicer' than nappy, kinky or curly hair?'

I think a lot of women of color just avoid that question altogether. To consider the question is to acknowledge that you may not have control over your own self-worth and values. This can be heartbreaking and live changing...so much so that most people never want to wrestle with that truth demon.

they'd rather keep that Truth Demon locked down under a wig or perm.

The amazing thing is that curly-haired white women often suffer from this, too. I was really surprised to discover this recently, having just been acquainted with online hair forums and what not. Also saying they wished their hair was "nice and straight". Who decided curls and kinks were nasty?

Yes, I agree with you.  However, I don't think white woman's dissatisfaction with their hair is on the same  level as Sisters.  We have deep-rooted shame of hair, that started as far back when we were infants.

Adults would check out the soft  hair on our tiny heads and wonder if it would eventually change/get kinky....

Then around 4-years-old, here comes all the under the breath/over the breath accusations about our hair
      being so unmanageable....

and let's not get into the images we are bombarded with in the meidia.  A white woman in 2 seconds can turn on the TV and see positive images of themselves....

I had this discussion in my political science and race class about a year ago. I was talking about a woman who got written up at work for wearing her natural hair. She was told it wasn't professional. All the White kids said that it was more professional to have it straightened and wondered why Black people would want to wear our hair like that. I told them it was in its natural state when it was kinky and why should we spend money on a procedure that could damage our hair and cause chemical burns? Who should tell us we can't wear our hair as the God intended?

We talked about it for the entire class period and the funny thing is...not one woman of color rallied to my defense and said anything about the beauty of natural hair. I even had a few sistas throw me nothing but dirty looks after that class period. One girl told me that I was airing our dirty laundry! It was then that I realized that as Black women, we are sometimes ashamed of our hair and what it represents.

You are absolutely right....Many sisters are following the Eurocentric standard of beauty.  They are so immersed in the deliberate brainwashing that they don't realize the natural beauty that is on their scalp.

And with this weave revolution, I don't know how long it's going to take until the masses of sisters wake up and embrace their own hair!
