Teacher Suspended for Nappy Hair Remark

On July 30, 2007 in the Florida Pinellas school
district, white teacher Porsha Call incurred
a 1-day unpaid suspension for calling a Black
elementary school girl's hair nappy.

Apparently, what happened a student asked
Call why another teacher was combing
a black girl's hair.  Call responded,
"She is trying to do something to
her nappy hair."

Another teacher reported the remark to an
administrator.

Call said she did not know the term was
offensive.

She will also receive diversity training.

Now, is this grounds for suspension?

We weren't there.  However, it's more
what Sisters are feeling inside about our
hair.  On the site:

Linda Jones talks about attending, this
past August, the National Association
of  Black Journalists Convention in Las
Vegas.

She was pleasantly amazed at all the locks,
twists, braids, free-style fros worn by high-
ranking editors and producers.

Self-acceptance is coming mainstream!
It's just around the corner.  Maybe
it's not so much the semantics we should
be concerned about.

More -- What's in your brain computer.
Learning to embrace and love our hair.
Yes, WE ARE OUR HAIR.
