Addiction to the weave is indeed becoming epidemic. I know too many BEAUTIFUL sistas who refuse to wear their own hair anywhere outdoors out of sheer embarrasment.

Who told us to feel so ashamed of our hair? If it was our mommas, then who told her? Think about it.

Nothing is going to change until we begin loving ourselves totally and completely as a people. We as a people hate ourselves. If we didn't we would not continue to face the same struggles here in the 21st century that we faced centuries B4. The white man did a good brainwashing job on us since slavery. We just continue the cycle with every generation. He does'nt have to do another thing, say another word. We keep doing it to ourselves from one generation to the next. We are not moving foward, we are moving backwards.

I have always want to ask this question. What do sistas like me do. I have hair to my waist and it is naturally straighter until you put water in it or humidity gets to it. A relaxer doesn't make it straighter but it does thin it out enough that I can but a ponytail holder or hair clip in it. I love myself but I didn't come with tightly coiled hair or sterotypically mixed-race hair. So what would you suggest that I do. Should I shave it off or cut it off so that I can be natural? I tried to get my hair into an afro years ago and it just wouldn't do it. So should I take the step that I do to get a relaxer every 5-6 months or go through extreme extra measures to be able to walk out the door without it standing all over my head or wearing it in twist that I don't think suit me at this age? So that you get an understanding of how MUCH hair I have and not just how long it is. If someone did a roller set they have to piggy back the rollers and then they have to cover the hood dryer with a towel because my head will not fit under the dryer because of all of the rollers. And, keep in mind that is IF I have a relaxer. With a relaxer sitting under the dryer with my hair free takes about 1 hr and 20 minutes to dry. It takes 3-days if I let it air dry.

So, sistas what do I do that would not be confused with self-hatred or self-loathing for the type of hair that I have?

        Peace

Valerie: your hair is natural if it's not relaxed. Having kinky hair has nothing to do with it. Altering your hair so that it could look kinky is NOT natural. God made you as you are: if it happens to come closer to the Eurocentric ideal, oh well. It doesn't make you any more or less worthy, beautiful, or African.

Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months.
