Natural Hair at Hampton University's 5-Year MBA Program a No-No

Virginia's Hampton University does not allow extreme hairstyles.
This would include locs, braids, cornrows.

Hampton's 5-year MBA students have to wear suits and
look corporate.

Translation:  If a student wants to keep their natural hair they
have to choose an alternative program.

Back in 2006, Essence magazine's editorial director Susan L. Taylor
withdrew from a speaking engagement at Hampton.  She said
that she was insulted.  She's been wearing braids more than half
her life.

"The freedom to wear our hair in ways that celebrate our heritage is
one of our 'rites of passage.' Students would benefit from learning
how to care for and groom locks and braids and wear them in ways
that are appropriate in a business setting," Taylor wrote.

And Susan is right.  How long are we going to continue to bow
down to the dominant culture's standards at the expense of our own?

As one sister put it on another blog, so wearing permed hair with
split ends that can do triple back flips is better than having our
natural hair?
