Should Negro Men Marcel Their Hair? This was the title of the
above article from Jet magazine on September 24, 1953.
Some folks back in the day said marcel or processed hair; also known
as konked hair looked, “sissified” on Brothers.
A konk-wearer explained, “We don’t look any more sissified than the
men of Victorianian times who powdered their wigs or wore pompadours.”
The article goes on to say men like renowned singer
Nat King Cole (above) and boxer Sugar Ray were regarded
as well-groomed with the process look.
