Liberia -- Only Natural Hair

(Courtesty BBC News)
Liberia has banned students
from wearing hair extensions,
weaves or other hair
attachments.
Educator Minister Joseph Korto
told BBC it was a way of
"instilling moral discipline in
our young people."
Can you imagine if that happened
in the United States, sisters
would have to be treated for
acute panic attacks!

Sister,
Surely you aren't suggesting that living in a society where the government dictates how a woman can wear her hair is better than freedon of choice? I don't think this move by Liberia is one to be lauded. It speaks more to the supression of woman's right's so prevalent in African nations. African countries have so much more to worry about than a track of weave on a woman's head.

Karen, great site! I too believe that we sacrifice who we are and give into commercialism. Our children's children will have no idea how beautiful black women are when sporting the natural-look free of chemicals.
I was born in the 70's and your site helped me remember what beautiful really is.

well a weave cost around 50 US dollars I think, 8/10 women have them and women outnumber men in Liberia. that's a lot of money one can save. and who told you gals that african cornrows, braids were out of style ? they should ban the shit in tne entire continent. Chinese are making money off sista's insecurities enough is enough.

You're absolutely right...other groups of people are profiting off of Black women's insecurities.

Instead of getting married again, I'm going to find a woman I don't like and just give her a house.
