The Konk Hair
Should Negro Men Marcel Their Hair? This was the title of the
above article from Jet magazine on September 24, 1953.
Some folks back in the day said marcel or processed hair; also known
as konked hair looked, "sissified" on Brothers.
A konk-wearer explained, "We don't look any more sissified than the
men of Victorianian times who powdered their wigs or wore pompadours."
The article goes on to say men like renowned singer
Nat King Cole (above) and boxer Sugar Ray were regarded
as well-groomed with the process look.
Today, we have folks like the Rev. Al Sharpton (above)
who process their natural kinkiness.
Give me a man with the Kink any day!!!!
To be honest, I do not think this website is particularly fair. Just because one wears a weave, it does not mean that they are rejecting their ethnicity or following a white standard of beauty. I am fully aware however, that there are blacks who regard "nappy hair" as a negative and ugly thing. But what about those who are in a similar situation as mine? I am in my 7th month of transitioning out of a perm and wear weaves as a transitioning style. Does that make me fake? Instead of the politics of black hair, it seems that the majority of the posts are passing judgment.
Why not spark off informed and thought provoking discussions on black hair politics through posts rather than slagging off celebrities and their lace fronts.

So you say you ar transitioning out of a perm and wearing weaves in the meantime....So what are you transitioning into?
Why are Sisters always covering up their real hair?

Freshman year of college I finally lopped off 6 years of oppressive hair relaxers and enjoyed myself in all my natural beauty.
There was no "transitioning" phase needed - what, do I need to "ease" myself back into the way I was born?
Gimme a break! I wasn't born with a set of no-lye and some gloves in my hands. Why do sistah think they need to hide they way they are???

Hey, that's what I thought too when I googled what to do with afro hair/how to maintain it! There is no maintaining or transitioning, that is a part of all the hogwash. Wash your hair, comb (if u want) and go. Why do we want to come out looking like anything but what we really do look like. You know what, i'm gonna chop off my inch long hair into barely there and forget there was ever anything like "hair care". And, how can we hide/reject what our lovin Father gave us? its too wrong, waaay wrong. I wish we could have anti-oppression day when every black person chopped off their hair down to a minimum. What would that do to our present state of mind in the world? great things ofcourse! We need to go out of our invisible slave chains and break free. And ladies, if that fake brother wants long silky hair to run his hands through, give him $5 and directions to the wigs wigs wigs store!
