Perspective White Guy on Black Hair

Check these video comments by TJ Walker (TJWalker.com).
He is a news commentator & best-selling author.  And he is in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most talk show appearances in a 24-hour period.

He is quite perceptive for a white guy on our hair...he talks about getting a peek into Black women's hair issue after watching Chris Rock's Good Hair movie...watching women putting acid in their hair!

Bottom line, he mentions AUTHENTICITY.  That's a term black women have to come to terms with & embrace & celebrate what grows out of our own heads!

Im a white guy and I completely agree with this guy. I understand it may be difficult to groom longer black hair, but it seems people strongly dislike the look of black hair. If we can accept all people with different looking skin, noses, eyes and other racially distinguishing features, you'd think we could accept people with different types of hair.

It also seems like much of the dislike for natural black hair comes within the black community (I'm assuming this, I could be wrong). If you can't accept your natural self, how can you expect those outside your community to accept you.

I've become rather interested in this because of Gabby Douglas. I still don't get what all the fuss is about her hair. She's a young black girl, of course she has black hair. Who cares, she's great at gymnastics, that's why she's in the Olympics, not for her hair. I find this all very interesting.

Andy, you are right much of the dislike for natural, coiled hair does come from within the Black community.  It is because we, meaning Black folks, have been brainwashed to dislike our own beautiful hair.  This conditioning
is through the media, advertisements, movies and historically from the first time white folks saw our hair and how different it was from theirs.

With so much brainwashing, Black folks are taught to hate their hair and don't realize that our hair is powerful, it does not relect in the sun rather it absorbs the sun rays.

Gabby Douglas' hair was not appealing to some Black people because maybe it was not straight enough for their white standards, I really didn't see the big deal myself....Or maybe she brought up some unhealed wounds that black people & especially how black women feel about their hair.

But as a white guy, you are getting just a peek with this whole Gabby Douglas issue, on the trials and tribulations Black women have about our hair.

Well said. But this is a vicious cycle that has followed us from generation to generation. I guess we don't intend on breaking the viciousness of it all. How sad for us!

Also it is important to view the screen in sunny conditions - some lower quality LCD screens can look washed out. Also check to ensure that the screen is large enough for you to see the image clearly.
